Native American Flute in Story and Song

$14 in advance /$16 day of show
$5 students 18 and under

Doors open at 7pm

The story and song of the Native American flute will be presented at a concert by musician and tribal music educator Jon Romer, at 7:30 p.m. Fri., March 16.

Romer, who has taught tribal music for the past 15 years, will weave into his performance the history and tradition of the Native American flute, its design on a pentatonic scale, the different types of flutes traditionally played by American Indians and the various types of music they played. A pentatonic scale is a musical scale with five notes per octave.

Audiences will hear American Indian songs that demonstrate the traditions Romer describes, as well as tunes they may recognize. Romer’s original works will also be part of the show.

Romer taught choral music and voice at the college level for 27 years and is a 2010 recipient of an Artist Initiative Grant from the Minnesota State Arts board.

The American Indian flute has a distinctive sound. Originally, length and hole placement were based on measurements using the body, such as the length from elbow to fingertip, or the width of a fist. It was played solo as an aid to meditation, healing and sacred rituals, or for romantic purposes. It was the first flute to have been made with two air chambers.
