Performance next door at the State Theatre in Zumbrota

What began as a song praising 40 notable women has become a touring play. Crossings brings back Ann Reed’s “Heroes: A Celebration of Women Who Changed History and Our Lives” to the Zumbrota State Theatre.

Reed, a folk singer who has been a guest on Garrison Keillor’s “A Prairie Home Companion,” “Good Morning America,” and NPR’s “Morning Edition,” wrote the song, “Heroes,” in reaction to public comments that there are no real role models left for children or adults. The song, released in 1991, struck a universal chord and grew to anthem proportion.

Wanting to build the song into something larger and enhanced by mixed media, Reed completed the play “Heroes: A Celebration.” She cast a host of talented performers and enlisted a local choir. The first performance was produced by Minnesota Public Radio and recorded on CD and DVD and received critical acclaim. In 2010-2011 Heroes toured to four Minnesota communities, including Zumbrota. In 2012, Heroes will tour to six communities, again stopping in Zumbrota.

The play features Ann Reed, Aimee K. Bryant, Leslie Ball, Dan Chouinard, Joan Griffith, Thomasina Petrus, and Denise Tabet, and a choir of local singers who will learn original songs and rehearse with Reed and the other touring musicians.

Reed, a veteran with 20 recordings under her belt, has received many awards, including: Minnesota Music Academy Performer of the Year, Songwriter of the Year, Best Recording of the Year, along with several awards from the multitude of nonprofits that she has supported while donating 25 percent of her time and efforts to organizations that primarily benefit women and children.

Heroes is supported on tour by a Legacy Grant, through the Minnesota State Arts Board.
