This mural, painted by artist and Mille Lacs Band member Steven Premo,
depicts the story of an unselfish and brave Ojibwe woman who saved the
Non-Indian Patrick family from the Great Hinckley Fire.

John Grabko returns to present a one hour-long power point presentation outlining the tragic events of September 1, 1894.

The story of the Hinckley fire of September 1, 1894, is a tragic saga of destruction, terror, courage, heroism, and death. Hinckley, a logging and railroad center, was laid waste by the
inferno that roared through the town, sending hundreds of townspeople in flight for their lives and leaving hundreds dead in its wake. Heroic individuals saved many lives.

Hinckley, once a booming north central Minnesota lumber town of 1,500 people found itself in the path of a fire storm that laid bare and charred more that one quarter million acres of land and forest in just a matter of hours! Its estimated that as many as 800 souls were lost. Hear of the drama & heroism of the day that Hinckley burned. You'll also learn about the dramatic escape by rail along the St. Paul Duluth Line and those unfortunates that found no refuge. Also, hear of an opportunity to join Historic Adventure & Travel Tours on a guided excursion to study the history of the fire in May of 2012.

Presented by John Grabko, President and founder of Historic Adventure & Travel Tours. Grabko works within the Historic Sites Division of the Minnesota Historical Society and is fulfilling a life-long dream and passion of sharing America's story and past with adventure travelers of all ages.
