On Nov 10th at 4 pm, Crossings at Carnegie will host Susan Cushman, co-author of The Wait: Love, Fear, and Happiness on the Heart Transplant List, the inspiring story of Northfield native Jennifer Bonner. Actor Alexandra Pozniak will perform excerpts from Bonner’s moving and entertaining diary, which forms the core of the book.

Born in 1966, Jennifer Bonner survived life-threatening heart defects and became an accomplished visual artist and diarist. When she was a junior at Carleton College, she developed end-stage heart failure and joined the University of Minnesota heart transplant list.

She spent the next year auditing classes, creating art, falling in and out of love, and hoping for a new heart. In her diary, Bonner confronts her mortality and physical limitations, while fluently describing the pleasure and humor in everyday events.

Novelist Jane Hamilton wrote the book’s foreword, saying, "Her appetite for life, her hunger for beauty, for meaning, for love, for joy radiates from these entries. How often she falls in love, how deeply she thinks about art, how insightful she is about her friends and family, how vulnerable and also how strong she is."

A 1972 Carleton graduate and retired physician, Cushman edited the diary and framed it with the story of Bonner’s family and the heart surgery advances that brought her to the brink of adulthood. General readers and medical professionals have found the book to be compelling and moving, as they share Bonner’s suspenseful year.

Crossings will display Bonner’s art and host a discussion after the 20-minute performance. Copies of The Wait will be available for purchase. The event is free and open to the public.
