Copying Your Art Work 101 with Bill Schmidt

Bill Schmidt

Bill is an award winning and published photographer and author. His work has been displayed in many galleries in and around Southeast Minnesota and Northeast Iowa, including Crossings, The Rochester Art Center and the Walker Art Center. Additionally, his work was published in the Chicago Tribune Magazine and galleries in the Chicago metro area. Bill is currently working with artists to develop economical copy skills for their artwork.

Copying any kind of flat art is a snap! The fun begins when you need the copy to be a nearly exact copy of the original. The required equipment is a good camera and a photo printer. Bill will show you how to get the most out of your equipment!

This class is designed to aid the artist in making quality copies of artwork suitable for sale as cards, prints or a website. The artist will develop skills to create high quality images of artwork using the best available lighting, a camera and printer.

The first lesson at Crossings is an overview of the process and required equipment. The second class is held at Bill’s home “studio” and covers the capture process, i.e. photographing the artwork. We should have time to copy one piece of work from each participant. During the third class, also at the studio, we will use Adobe Photoshop® to format, color-correct and print the image on an Epson® photo printer. While we will be using Photoshop, the terms and processes used are universal and will transfer to any pro or semipro photo editing product.

Bill will present a thorough introduction in making Giclee prints of your artwork. Discussions on scanners, cameras, lighting, archival printers, paper and inks, color correction, software, pixel count and more will be part of this three-session course. You will have an opportunity to use the studio equipment, but are encouraged to bring your camera for the practical exercises.
