Renaissance and Flemish Oil Painting with Dan Petrov

Dan Petrov painting

Dan Petrov Instructor Dan Petrov is an award-winning and internationally recognized artist. Dan says: “Light is the only subject in painting. Content is our projection of ideas in the visible world.” Students can expect to develop an improved sense of visualizing what is in front of their eyes at Dan’s workshops.

This workshop will introduce the Renaissance Method of painting in seven consecutive layers.

How did Titian, Leonardo or Caravaggio create their unsurpassed paintings five hundred years ago? Instructor Dan Petrov will explain their painting process, demonstrate each step and help you to apply these techniques to your canvas.

You will learn how to create “imprimatura,” how to transfer the drawing to canvas, how to create two stages of underpainting in umber tones, how to build full value underpainting in “grisaille” and how to finish the painting with colors. Many references to old paintings will help to illustrate their historical origin and significance for history of art. The most important aspect of the knowledge of Renaissance masters is their use in our modern painting process.

You will gain a full understanding why old masters built the paintings with this method and acquire the skills to apply practical use of the method in modern painting. This method is the most efficient way of painting that systematically treats problems of form, values, light, edges and color. Enhance your artistic expression and travel back in time for lessons of Renaissance masters.

Spend two days creating the grisaille (monochrome or near-monochrome) painting, and one day a week later applying three color layers.

Dan will provide canvas boards for each student with transfer of drawing in place.
