See Eric in concert the evening of the workshop after class!
An avid reader and a keen, compassionate observer, Eric tells stories of the human condition, painting striking portraits of people we’ve seen, maybe people we resemble, maybe people we hadn’t even noticed until we hear his songs. The chords hit deep, and there’s a resonance that remains long after the last word or note has sounded.
In this workshop, Eric will talk about his approach to writing and storytelling, and how his life experience has shaped and continues to shape his perception and interest in the world around him. He’ll discuss the research and layering that goes into building each written piece or song as he combines words and melodies. He’s also interested in hearing what participants are working on. While he doesn’t do song critiques, per se, he can guide students in suggesting different directions to consider or approaches to take.
Melodically Eric works in a number of tunings and sometimes invents his own. This workshop will give students the chance to learn and explore different tunings while creating melodies that serve as an additional voice to each written piece. The class works well for writers and songwriters, providing the opportunity to spend up-close and personal time with a working, professional writer and songwriter.
Students should bring a writing notebook and their guitar.
