Old World Chip Carving with Jan Jenson

Jan’s carving career started in 2002.  Her instructor took the class to a woodcarving show where she saw a piece that inspired her to start creating her own patterns. She even began making her own boxes to carve on. After entering several competitions and doing quite well, Jan was asked to teach. That was 8 years ago. Jan’s whole life has been teaching, first as a junior high teacher, then as a tour director and now as a carving teacher.  Then 5 years ago, some of her students said that she needed to write a book to share her patterns, which she did. Jan loves to teach and share what she loves to do.

Learn the art of Chip Carving! Chip carving, or kerbschnitt in German, is a style of carving in which knives are used to remove small chips of the material from a flat surface in a single piece. The faceted surfaces created caught the light to give a glinting appearance. This is a two-day workshop with Jan Jenson, on Sat.-Sun, Jun. 22-23. Class meets from 9am-5pm.

Jan will teach you how to do Old World chip carving with 3 easy cuts. After selecting a pattern, you will glue the pattern to your surface and start carving right away! No drawing needed. You will first do a practice piece to learn the technique of Old World chip carving.  Students may then choose to carve a beautiful design on a two-deck box, a single recipe box, a napkin holder, or a trivet. The prices range from $12 to $27, depending of which project you choose. These all can be completed in 2 days.

Sandpaper, wipe-on poly, a practice board and patterns will be supplied. There are extra projects for purchase. Jan’s book, “Blue Ribbon Chip Carving,” will also be available with complete instructions and many patterns.

If you have one, bring a chip carving knife as well as a light and magnifying glasses if you think you will need them. Jan will have several chip carving knives available for purchase. Only one knife is necessary for chip carving.

Teens are welcome to join this class. Price is $129 plus you will purchase a project piece for $12-27. Bring a sack lunch. If you don't have a chipping knife, you can buy one for $22-40.
